Livingroom Makeover

When I first moved into my house I was in a decorating frenzy to get everything done.  After a few months and some disappointing paint colors, I decided to live in the space for a while to see how I felt, before making any more changes.  While the whole house is still in a fluid state of decor rotation, I finally have it at a point where I feel comfortable enough to share.

Here is a look at where the living room started and where it is today.

IMG_3156Again, please disregard my realtor.

IMG_3515This is what it looked like when I first moved in.

IMG_3588I thought I liked the color, so curtains seemed like a good place to start.  Yet somehow, even though the curtains were beige linen, they blended right in with the mint walls.  It just looked blah.

IMG_5188 Enter Darker mint paint. “Malted Mint” to be exact.  I love it, but the window still needed something, so I added bamboo shades to fill in the wall between the windows and the curtains.

The other side of the living room has gone through multiple changes.  How do you decide what the best use of an extra couple feet of space should be?

IMG_3516The desk fit nicely, but reminded me of living in an apartment.

IMG_3756An extra sitting area seemed like a logical choice, but what to do with that wall.

IMG_5192At some point someone told me the turquoise had gone a little over board too.

Hey! It’s “Mint”……but I had to agree.

IMG_6114So I toned it down by painting the arch “Soft Cream”.

IMG_5713Still a work in progress.

 What do you think?

What is this Room?

Is it a bedroom? Is it a Dining Room?  Is it an Office? Well it’s all three of course!

IMG_3155

That’s what happens when you live in 700 sq ft of space!

This is how it started out and  yes that door does lead to the garage.  This room does it all!

IMG_3608What it doesn’t do well, is fit a queen size bed and still leave room for anything else.  Sadly it was the first thing to go.  Sorry guests.  Now on to more important things like paint colors.  Did I mention there were a lot of disappointing paint colors?

IMG_4234Current color?  No.  Yellow? No.

IMG_4233How about a Carribean turquise?  Or “Backstroke” to be exact?  Stealing from the living room tv stand and tying the rooms together.  Yes!

I’m just not sure where that name came from.

IMG_4239The entire room though? NO!

IMG_4379Saved again by “Soft Cream”.

IMG_4941But where are the guests supposed to sleep you ask?

IMG_5185No worries, Ikea has a fix for that. How about a Breakfast Nook, by day.  I’m still working a new table that won’t break the bank, but for now I like how this one works.

IMG_5178Then I’ll turn it into a full Size bed, by night.  Sure it’s not a queen, but it’s not like my guests are moving in. Plus the room is only 9′ x 11′.  That leaves just enough room left for my desk.

IMG_6104I’m working on another space for my office, but for now I love the light in this room.

IMG_6095

What do you think?  Sure it would be nice to have three diffrent rooms, but where is the imagination in that?

New Love

Everyone has been asking, so I figure it’s finally time for an update. I have a new love in my life. My house….

Capture22 Bed, 1 Bath, 1 Car Garage, 750 Sq Ft

What my home lacks in size, it makes up for in character, use of space, and location.

As Zac Brown Band puts it…

“And my house its not much to talk about
But its filled with love
Thats grown in southern ground

And a little bit of chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up”

IMG_3322Looking for a house in St. Petersburg/Clearwater area turned into a more difficult adventure then I bargained for.  After previously looking at houses in Orlando, I had to wipe my head clear of any idea of what I can get in terms of size, updates or even a second bathroom for the money.  It’s hard to believe that most of the houses on this coast are still working with original bathrooms and kitchens.  I’ve never seen more yellow, purple, pink, and turquoise bathrooms in my life as I have these past few months.  I wish I had pictures for you because they were pretty interesting.  That and apparently the idea of having a second bathroom is a new concept over here.  That is unless you want to put it in the garage or laundry room.

3147 61st Ln N, Saint Petersburg, FL 33710

The first house I put an offer on had a toilet and sink in the laundry room and I thought I hit the big one.  That is until I found out that the whole house needed to be rewired for electric  just to get insurance AND it was in a food zone.  For those of you unfamiliar with flood zones in Florida, take your home owners insurance and double it and that’s what it would have been for me to insure this house with flood insurance.

After that I…

-Had a minor break down, since my lease on the apartment was up in two months and it took 6 months to find that house.

-Had a fight with the Realtor to get my deposit back, because no one told me the house was in a flood zone and I had to find out on my own.

-Had to find a new mortgage banker because my current banker couldn’t provide me the appropriate paperwork to get out of the contract on the house even through I no longer qualified for the house with the flood insurance.  He could only provide paperwork qualifying me for the house but no paperwork saying I no longer qualified.

– Had to make many phone calls to get a new realtor.

– Last, I had to eliminate all negative people in my life that were adding more stress to my situation.

Then I was ready to look for a new house again.  I found my current home two weeks after that.  It turns out I just needed a cleanse to find the house I really wanted.  Of course it did need a new roof and I still had to muddle through those negotiation and wait for the installation and re-inspection, but in the end I’m so happy with my choice.

So if you were wondering, buying a home was one of the most stressful things I’ve ever had to do.  If it wasn’t for daily phone calls to my mom and my best friend walking me through every step of the way, I may have given up on the whole thing.  The reward though…It’s MINE.  After moving 23 times in 32 yrs, I finally have a place to call HOME.  So come on in…
